Govt moves to rid kitchens of kerosene

The Lagos state Government through the commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources is determined to make the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) the only source of domestic energy for cooking.
Presently the major source of domestic energy for cooking in most Nigerian homes is kerosine, which despite its high costs is not healthy.
The commissioner, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources,
Mrs. Regina Obasa, added that the government was convinced that LNG Lagos homes had more advantages than other sources of energy.
He said, “Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) was introduced as the fuel of choice for Lagosians in order to reduce carbon emissions from the use of firewood and kerosene and because it is healthier, safer, more efficient and convenient to use for cooking.
“Certain health problems like conjunctivitis, bronchitis and even heart diseases are on the increase and it is being suspected that the use of kerosene and charcoal are likely causes of some of these diseases because of the fumes inhaled when used for cooking.
“It is in the light of these that the government, in conjunction with the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, started sensitising and distributing free Eko Gas stove cylinders to Lagosians.”
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of Somolu Local Government Area, Omogbolahan Bagostowe, commended the government for the initiative.
He said the development would prevent hazards faced while using firewood, charcoal and kerosene.
Bagostowe said, “The council will also complement the efforts of the government by giving out one 100 free gas cylinders with full accessories every month till December 2014.
“This initiative is also a poverty alleviating scheme as about 500 gas cylinders have been distributed to residents without being partial to political party affiliations.”
The representative of the President of the LCCI, Mr. Femi Adeko, advised the residents of the area to shun the use of kerosene and other traditional sources of domestic energy, saying they could lead to respiratory problems and other health issues.
