Boko Haram seizes town where it kidnapped Nigerian schoolgirls in April

Boko Haram has captured the Nigerian town where they kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls earlier this year.

The militant group seized the town of Chibok on late Thursday, residents and an official told CNN. They also attacked the towns of Hong and Gombi. "Boko Haram has taken over Chibok and we have all fled," a Christian priest in the village told CNN. "They are now in control of the town, having overpowered the soldiers and the vigilantes."

The group controls a substantial portion of Nigeria's northeastern frontier bordering Cameroon.

Boko Haram's leaders last month called reports that a deal had been reached with Nigeria "a lie." The schoolgirls, captured in April, have reportedly been married off after being converted.

Despite instituting martial law, Nigeria's government has struggled to halt the advance of the group.
